1. Do your Homework and Be Prepared if an Emergency Arises

Be prepared for emergency situations. It definitely helps to do some research as soon as you purchase a vehicle. One study shows if your car was built in the past 5 years the replacement key fob will need to come from the dealership, due to the expensive programming equipment. However, if your car is older than five years, you most likely will be able to use an aftermarket key fob, which can be programmed by your local locksmith. In the rare instance where you find yourself locked out of your car; you will be glad you spent the small amount to have a backup fob on hand.

2. Keep a Mechanical Blank on Hand

“For key fob owners, keep a mechanical blank handy to keep you from being locked out” says Josh Seyber, Head Locksmith, Elmer’s Lock & Safe. Ask us for more information on how to obtain a mechanical blank.

Prolonging the life of your car key fobs is also very attainable. It is recommended to replace the battery in the key fob every 1-2 years, especially if you notice having to push the remote several times to get it to unlock. Research has shown by repeatedly pushing the buttons multiple times in a row along with pressing them harder than they were designed to, the fob will wear down quicker, making the likelihood of needing them replaced much greater.

4. Where to Store your Key Fob

Did you also know that where you store your key fob matters? If you store your fob too close to your car; either in your car or on a hook near your car, you may be draining your battery much faster than necessary. When you leave the fob too close to your car, it is actually trying to communicate with the vehicle continuously, draining the battery.

5. Clean the keyhole often, even if no physical key is necessary to operate vehicle

If your key fob has stopped working, before you run off and seek a professional’s help, Seyber also states, “If you have a key fob, the driver’s door has a hole for a key. Turn to lock and unlock it to ensure the locks are fine mechanically. Sometimes it will freeze up and may not work. Wipe out any dust and debris out of there to allow it function properly.”
